The notion of business as a combination of sport and war was attributed to Emile Herzog (1885-1967), a French author who used the pen name, Andre Maurois.

The right strategy and the right mindset can be key to the survival and success of any business. War teaches you strategy. It shows you the importance of never underestimating your adversary and it shows you the importance of structure and purpose. Sport on the other hand, fortifies your mental strength. It trains you to show grace however the outcome. It teaches you how to handle failure. It shows you that even though you may have lost a battle, you could still win the war.
