Intellectual property has the shelf life of a banana
Intellectual property can be used to create a moat (ability to maintain competitive advantages over its competitors in order to protect its long-term profits and market share from competing firms) but it has a limited shelf life.
If you are not investing constantly to renew your intellectual property, without a moat from some other source you are dead. Better yet, invest constantly in creating new intellectual property to replace what will inevitably expire.
